Kottukkaali Internationally titled The Adamant Girl, is a Tamil-language movie that explores the intersections between caste, love and social norms within rural India. Directed by P.S. Vinothraj famous for his critically highly acclaimed debut Koozhangal (Pebbles) the film stars Soori along with Anna Ben in lead roles and Anna Making the film her Tamil debut.

Theatrical Release

The film made its premiere in February 16 2024 at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, which it was screened at the Forum section. After its debut in the international market, Kottukkaali was released in Indian cinemas on August 23 2024. The film received wide praise for its powerful narrative and intense performances.

Plot Synopsis

The film is set in the central region located in the heartlands of Tamil Nadu, Kottukkaali narrates the tale of Meena an 21-year-old woman who finds love with a man of an under-represented caste. Her family’s strict belief in traditional values causes them to believe that her love as the result of a possession. To “cure” her, they bring her to a shaman from a remote village who uses rituals of witchcraft, and even sacrifices a bird in order to erase her memory. The journey reveals the root problems of caste discrimination, patriarchal norms, as well as the stifling of women’s rights in Indian society.
